From The Colonel

The Colonel is the name of my vw van (long story). Any way, the Colonel is also my studio away from studio. I often sneak away in it, park next to a park, and sketch. It provides a nice sanctuary from the crazy world, and the windows create automatic compositions for me. The sketching process forces me to focus my consciousness and helps calm my mind. It's a process that's more about the process than the output.

  1. Hey, glad to hear from you and that you are still sketching! Are you finding space to paint?

I was listening to an interview with Sting on NPR and someone asked him when he was going to make an album of original material and he said he felt artists went through periods of input and output and that he was currently in a period of input. Listening to and reading and seeing the work of others. I don't usually reference Sting, but I was struck by that comment. I have been productive again after a few years of quiet. But I think the input is important.

Anyways, I love the idea of the window compositions. To whatever output we can muster!

  2. i like this idea of seperate periods. i have never thought about a period of non-productivity being a good thing, but i do think this is positive. john cage talked about seperating analysis from creation, and i've alway thought about it in the short term; like the process of creating an individual painting - looking and analyzing, then making marks - all within the same sitting. my analyzing period has lasted months, and sadly been a little shy of analyzing. however the "fasting" that i've done in not painting for this time, i think, has been good for me. i painted today for the first time in several months and i felt more brave than before. i think i scraped and painted-over much more freely than before, and didn't settle for "ok".

glad to know that you are back in the productive period, Kate. how has your work evolved after the introspection?
